Daisy

Daisy is now fully sponsored, thanks to the generosity of Elizabeth McIntosh. Thank you!

Hello to you all! My name is Miss Daisy, but please call me Daisy.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be at the refuge. Before I got here I was so lonely. My human flock was out all day and I had no-one to talk to or return my calls for company. When they got home in the evening, my human flock was tired and weren’t interested in talking to me. I thought it was better to be quiet, so I just sat in my cage and began chewing on my feathers. It gave me something to do and kept me busy. After a while, I didn’t even notice I was doing it. When I got to the Refuge and saw many other birds with chewed feathers, I was surprised, and I was even more shocked to realize that my once lovely plumage was almost chewed away.

Here at the Refuge, I learned that it was not my fault. We aren’t meant to be alone all the time. Well, that’s not a problem anymore. In my new home in the Special Needs Unit, I’m never alone. I always have someone new to talk to, and people are always visiting and telling me how beautiful I’m looking. I’ve forgotten about chewing my feathers so much because I have so any other things to do, and birds and people to see and visit. I’ve even invented a bit of a dance to show off how my new feathers are growing back in. If you haven’t seen Grant’s video, have a look now!

  1. ok i really like miss daisy too…shes beautiful…and she looks very happy now! what a great personality!

  2. What a neat place you have there. We live here on Whidbey Island,WA. We have a parrot of our own, aprox. two and a half years now. A beautiful, very spoiled, “Sun Conure “named: “Sunny”. We plan on coming up for a visit as soon as the weather gets a little nicer.

Do you have any input on when would be a good time for a visit ??

  3. Hi Earle and Patty,

As a local to Vancouver Island, I am probably biased and will say that anytime is a good time for a visit! If you want the warmest weather, June – September is the best time, and the refuge is open 10am-4pm, 7 days a week. The birds will love to meet you!

    Take care,
    Jane

  4. Hi there! My mom and I were thinking about visiting you guys quite soon, and I was told that the admission price is about $12 for the day. Is this so when Santa “Claws” visits? And are visitors welcome pretty much any time?

(Yes, we are VI locals, but I’d rather to e-mail you with the details.)

  5. We have a blue and gold Macaw named Thor.
I stay home alot—-I have fibromyalgia and enjoy the companionship of our “thunder-chicken”. Our house has a place in every room where he can be. A rope swing in the shower, a giant swing with toys in both living and rumpus rooms a giant tree on a platform with casters and food dish and toys—-the tree was created by his real owner, my 26 year old son and my husband. This tree can be pushed from room to room. He also has 2 large cages, one in dining room—-which is in a large area in the house shared by kitchen, dining and rumpus areas. The other cage is in Gord’s room—-he sleeps with his boy, and loves it. When I fix his foods in the morning and come to get him, he very often looks like anyone who would rather stay in bed. Everyone who comes to see us loves to see Thor too and we all have alot of fun. We adore him. I would love to come and see the refuge, but I hope that we would not be made to feel like bad people for having him. When we go to the Parrot Paradise in Victoria, we always “play” with the birds there. I hope that you get the help you need to protect and continue to care for these wonderful birds! I wish that they could have the life they were meant to have in their true homes—–the wild—-but we all know that becomes less and less possible every day! Good luck to you—-I still want to bring my family to visit—-the sooner the better—-I’ll try to bring whatever little offerings I can. A dedicated bird and animal lover of all kinds.
