Last month Wendy led a delegation of WPR supporters and parrots to the steps of the legislature in Victoria, BC, in an attempt to remind our political leaders that the money taken from lotteries and gambling in this province has been justified in the past because it was used to “help charities” and other worthwhile non-profit groups. Lately this funding has been drastically cut.
Wendy wanted to remind the minister that the birds are alive and have real needs, and are not just objects that can be forgotten. The message Wendy wanted to get across was, “Please don’t forget us – we still need help.” So far there’s been no response other than silence. I guess the minister didn’t hear us.
Deddeda is an amazing photojournalist who has kindly shared her work at the legislature with us. Her website can be found at http://www.deddeda.com. Thank you, Deddeda!
If you have not visited the centre, for these birds yet, make it a top priority when you pass thru this region of Central Vancouver Island.
I also had the privelege to work for Wendy, and the Parrots, when I was attending Vancouver Island University.
So, I was able to have a behind the scene knowledge of how the operations work,
I can tell you that Wendy, the Staff,
the Volunteers are an amazing, unique,
devoted bunch of Kindred Spirits.
I had never been around Parrots before,
and the entire process changed me.
The Feathered Friends I made will forever be with me.
The look on others faces when they visit the main houses, and then the hospital….it really changes you.
These are wonderful, intelligent,
at times belligerent birds, whom I
am honoured to have crossed paths with.
The centre’s open-cage, with social interaction of others of their kind,
and us humans…..is an atmosphere
that changes the life force of these amazing parrots.
They are so happy, in their new found
enviroment, that the Parrot Refuge centre is commited to provide.
Cheers to everyone who supports.
Sincerely Bonita.
