Buster's Wing Video

25 Jun 2007, 10:06 am - Posted by Grant Mail - 321 views - Categories: Special Needs, Newcomers and Updates

An African Grey is unexpectedly delivered to the refuge. His name is Buster, and he has been picking at his wing for some time. The wound is badly infected and the bone may be damaged. His wing may need to be amputated...

After the video I've posted an update from Wendy as of Sunday night.

From Wendy:

Buster's wing looks very different already - clean and not smelly - however he kept chewing at it, so I collared him today. Now he is mad at me! I soak his wing in epsom salts twice a day, as well as give him a double shot of the antibiotics and pain killer/anti-inflammatory that he is on.

We will be going to see the avian vet on Tuesday. You will be surprised on Monday when you see how much weight he has gained - he does not stop eating! Whatever he costs - he is worth every penny. He also smells clean and fresh! Today I wrapped him in a big fluffy white towel after his soaking and told him that he was at the Spa - he looked so fabulous with the big fluffy towel around his face! He just loved it when I blow dried him.

I came to this site to look for directions, but when I read this article about Buster I was overwhelmed with the need to thank you so much for your dedication to these birds. I am so grateful that people like you are setting such an amazing example that I can share with my 15 year old son Stefan. We look forward to visiting you on Tuesday. Bless you and thank you

Hello, my name is monica and I happened onto your website, and I must say, I am very moved by what I saw on these videos.
I'm in tears watching these parrots who haved plucked out their beautiful feathers, and poor Buster whose wing is all infected, my god...how can someone let that get so bad! I have been looking to buy a parrot to love and cherish along with my other 2 smaller birds, a cockatiel and a love bird whom I rescued from a negligiant owner. My question to you folks,do you adopt any of these birds out to people who will continue the care they are getting, in a new owners home?
God Bless you all..I'm still crying.

"This is, in a word, a great place and these miraculous creatures deserve no less, but few places can deliver it this well. It is, indeed, 'world class'."

– Stewart Metz (author and Director of the Indonesian Parrot Project), after his visit at the Grand Opening of the Refuge on August 13, 2005.

"The World Parrot Refuge is a true sanctuary where parrots live out their lives in a loving, spacious and happy environment under the guidance of extraordinarily caring people. The many visitors destined to pass through the refuge will come to understand that parrots are not toys or trophies, but beings with needs and emotions as real as our own."

– Rosemary Low (author of more than 30 books on parrots)
