Larry is another one of our volunteer group. Lately he's been assembling the frames for the new Macaw flight cages:

My sister sent me you're article from the "Seattle Times". I have had a very gorgeous Double Yellow Head Amazon sence he was in pinfeathers. He was to be for my daughter who had one pass away during surgery for a hernia. She couldn't take the bird so we took him. He bonded to me and tolerates my husband. I love this bird very much and would do anything to keep him happy and healthy. Problem is, we are in our mid 60's and he is only 12. I worry about what will happen to him when I can no longer care for him. Quite honestly I have a hard time keeping up with him now. Some days he wears me out. All my friends and family hate him because he bonded to me and won't tolerate any other person. Knowing what the bird can be like. I'm afraid the normal person would not put up with him and he would end up going from hand to hand and treated poorly and be very unhappy. I would rather have him put to sleep than see him end up like that.

I am so glad to know there is a place that might be able to care for him some day. I thank you for the article in the paper. I also thank you for caring so much for the birds you have. Susan

Susan, here's a note from Wendy regarding the type of Amazon Parrot you have:

"Male Double Yellowhead Amazons are very dominant and very aggressive birds especially in the breeding season. Rosemary Low told me that in Loro Parque breeding facility the DYH Amazons are the only birds kept in suspended cages so that they can be cleaned without the caregivers being mutilated."

"The World Parrot Refuge is a true sanctuary where parrots live out their lives in a loving, spacious and happy environment under the guidance of extraordinarily caring people. The many visitors destined to pass through the refuge will come to understand that parrots are not toys or trophies, but beings with needs and emotions as real as our own."

– Rosemary Low (author of more than 30 books on parrots)

"This is, in a word, a great place and these miraculous creatures deserve no less, but few places can deliver it this well. It is, indeed, 'world class'."

– Stewart Metz (author and Director of the Indonesian Parrot Project), after his visit at the Grand Opening of the Refuge on August 13, 2005.
